Veganuary
Veganuary. A challenge established by a non-profit British organization. Already since 2014, it represents a so-called “new year revolution” that inspired around one million people from 192 countries in the world who support it. The most participants come from the Great Britain; nevertheless, the involvement slowly spreads to the USA and to other countries including Mexico, Argentina, Germany, and Switzerland. Each year, more and more people engage in the Veganuary challenge, commit themselves to eat plant-based foods only and to abstain from meat and all animal source foods from their diet. Food businesses, restaurants, and supermarkets also join this challenge. It is essentially a celebration of life, nonviolence, understanding, life without unnecessary suffering, planet protection, and overall, of a vision of a better world.
Vegan foodstuff
Thanks to the yearly rise in number of vegans, the food industry has been trying to cover their needs. They do so for example by producing non-animal source food alternatives, such as tempeh, seitan, tofu, coconut milk, nut butters, and many others. But this trend is beneficial also for people with a standard diet. Vegetarian and vegan diet slowly enters the restaurant menus and has got a significant representation in food supplement industry, such as quality-protein vegan cocktails. Solely plant-based ingredients will not only provide you with a great taste, but will supplement your body with many beneficial substances and very valuable fibre. Many vegan products also include purely plant-based sources of protein and are often sugar-free, preservative-free, dye-free, and gluten-free. Plant-based diet further positively affects the weight loss, reduces cholesterol, and regulates both blood pressure and glycaemia (level of glucose in blood). It has got a preventive effect on the onset of cancer, mainly colon, prostate, and breast cancer. The potential of plant-based foodstuff is immense. Additionally, a raw food diet, an eating regime popular among vegans that consists of foodstuff processed below 45 degrees Celsius, represents a real support for body cells. Nutrients that are not thermally modified support immunity, strengthen nervous system, regulate metabolism and may have a preventive effect on diseases.
If you pass a confectioner’s, you only see cakes full of eggs, milk, butter, curd, and related ingredients. These sweets are obviously inappropriate (not only) for vegans. But the vegan world thinks of those who have a sweet tooth too. The market is full with all sorts of vegan bars or raw desserts that will satisfy even the most spoiled sweets lovers.
Proteins
Protein is one of the most debatable topics regarding the vegan diet. As a matter of fact, this plant-based diet provides all essential protein substances that we call amino acids. Beans, lentils, chickpeas, rice protein, soy products, peanut butter, cashew nuts and pumpkin seeds are all biologically significant sources of protein. The deficient vitamin B12 may be obtained from enriched foodstuff including dairy product alternatives, breakfast cereals, plant-based spreads, yeast extract, or tempeh.
